Football Tournament Collects School Shoes for Local Learners

Community football tournament collects school shoes to help children in need across local schools.

The sixth annual Shoe Donation Thanksgiving Tournament took place at the Coronation sports field over the weekend, bringing together seven teams united by both football and community spirit. Two teams travelled from Vryheid, three from Dundee, one from Mpumalanga and one from Paulpietersburg. To participate, each team donated five pairs of school shoes.

Organiser highlights purpose behind the annual initiative

Tournament organiser Xavi Ngwenya shared his gratitude and passion for the initiative, saying, “It has been six full years organising this tournament. Our main wish is to help primary school children with brand-new school shoes, especially those who are really in need. We believe this is a way to give back to the community and boost confidence in our future leaders.”

Strong performances as Dundee teams meet in the final

The weather was good, allowing the games to proceed smoothly. The finals saw a Dundee derby, with Man United facing Zonke FC. Both teams impressed on the field and walked away with soccer balls, medals and trophies as champions of the day.

Thirty-five pairs of shoes to benefit local schools

Ngwenya confirmed that a total of 35 pairs of school shoes were collected and will be distributed in January, when schools re-open. Beneficiary schools include Thakazela, Nkongolwane, Emandleni and others in the Coronation and Hlobane areas.

Organiser calls for greater community and business support

He extended his appreciation to all participating teams; Mr Thokozni from Ward 23; and Ward 6 Councillor Mdlalose. Ngwenya concluded by urging sponsors and business owners to support initiatives that uplift those in need. The next tournament is scheduled for April 2026.
