Residents slam neglect as Amajuba Park deteriorates
Residents have raised concerns over poor service delivery, crime and deteriorating infrastructure.
For years, residents of Amajuba Park say they have felt neglected and forgotten.
According to residents, service delivery in the suburb is almost non-existent, with the municipality allowing the area to deteriorate under crumbling infrastructure. Roads are riddled with potholes, fields are overgrown, and storm-water drains are either broken or blocked.
The area has also become an apparent hot-spot for criminal activity, ranging from home burglaries to robberies committed in broad daylight.

Residents are fed up
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he has lived in the suburb for nearly 20 years and has never seen it in such poor condition as it has been over the past few years.
According to him, the area has become plagued by service delivery issues, with sewage spills and potholes among the most persistent problems.
“This place has just turned to rubbish. It stinks 24/7. Driving in the area is horrible because you constantly have to avoid potholes. To make matters worse, the overgrowth in Amajuba Park is ridiculous. Now you are not only avoiding potholes, but also accidents because you cannot see oncoming traffic at stop streets due to the overgrown grass,” he said.
Damage after pipe replacement project
Another issue residents raised is the damage left behind after a pipe replacement project about two years ago.
Roads and driveways were severely damaged during the work and, to date, have not been repaired, making driving in certain parts of Amajuba Park almost intolerable.
Rooikat Avenue and Olifant Avenue are among the roads that remain in a state of disrepair.

Simply no answer
Residents say they have reported these issues to Newcastle Municipality multiple times.
However, they claim their pleas for assistance have gone unanswered.
The Newcastle Advertiser has sent several media enquiries to Newcastle Municipality regarding the service delivery issues in the area. However, no response has been received as yet.
