Strong winds leave Vryheid family without shelter

Strong winds destroyed a Vryheid home, leaving 10 family members displaced.

Last week’s strong winds and severe weather conditions left the Zwane family from Vryheid Hill, Watts area devastated after a huge tree was uprooted and fell onto their home.

Although all 10 family members survived the incident, a mother and her two-year-old baby sustained minor injuries and were treated at hospital.

Family member Qinisile Zwane said the incident happened during the early hours of the morning.

“It was around 4am when we noticed that the tree had fallen on top of our house. The tree covered almost the entire house, making it difficult for us to get out, but eventually we managed to escape,” said Zwane.

“We were fortunate that no one was seriously injured, but the two-year-old baby was hit on the head and the mother sustained injuries to her back. They were both taken to hospital for further treatment.”

Family appeals for assistance

The family has since been left struggling without proper shelter and basic necessities.

“We do not know what to do at the moment. We mainly need shelter and clothing, as we are currently forced to make fire outside to cook. We would appreciate any kind of donation,” added Zwane.

Municipality provides support

Officials from the Department of Human Settlements and AbaQulusi Local Municipality attended to the family and are providing assistance.

For donations, Qinisile Zwane can be contacted on 073 503 9188.
