40 motorists arrested for drunk driving over the weekend
40 motorists were arrested for drunk driving during a late-night RTI operation.
A total of 40 motorists were arrested for drunk driving during a major roadblock operation conducted by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Ladysmith on Saturday night (May 16).
The operation continued into the early hours of Sunday morning, with authorities taking a firm stance against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.
Wide range of professions among those arrested
According to information released following the operation, those arrested came from various professions and walks of life.
Among them were:
| Two doctors |
| Three South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers |
| A military practitioner attached to the SANDF |
| Three teachers |
| A community development practitioner |
| A mechanic |
| A plumber |
Taxi drivers arrested while transporting passengers
Authorities also arrested three taxi drivers who were allegedly transporting passengers while under the influence of alcohol.
The arrests have raised serious concerns about public safety, particularly regarding drivers responsible for transporting commuters.
“Friends forced me to drink,” claims motorist
One of the motorists arrested, reportedly told officials that he had managed to avoid alcohol for seven days before allegedly giving in to peer pressure on the eighth day. He claimed his friends had forced him to drink.
Authorities warn motorists
The RTI has once again warned motorists against drinking and driving, especially during late-night social gatherings and weekends. Authorities say operations will continue across the province as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce alcohol-related crashes.
