An armed robbery was reportedly committed at a retail store in a local shopping centre earlier this evening (May 30).

It is believed that a number of men entered the store after closing time before fleeing with bags containing items they had stolen. They allegedly fled in three separate vehicles.

Witness describes the chaos

According to a witness who requested to remain anonymous, she was having dinner and celebrating a friend’s birthday when they heard a commotion.

“We suddenly heard chaos, with people screaming and running. The next moment, about 10 men carrying a white plastic bag stretched full of stuff ran past. The man in front was holding a handgun,” the witness said.

It is unclear at this stage whether anyone was injured during the incident.

Centre management comments

Centre management said they were aware of the incident, but were unable to provide any further details as an investigation is ongoing.

“We are working with the local SAPS and remain committed to ensuring a safe shopping environment for all,” they concluded.
