Mariska and John claim zone championship titles
Dundee Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Singles Championships, where bowlers competed for the West Cup and Kay Cup titles.
Dundee Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Singles Championships last weekend, with 27 men and 15 women competing for the West Cup and Kay Cup titles.
The women’s section saw five players progress to the winners’ stage:
- Alice Howe, Nancy Steyn and Mariska du Bruyn from Newcastle Bowling Club
- Jo-Ann Conolly and Elise de Jager from Dundee Bowling Club.
In the play-off matches, Mariska defeated Nancy before overcoming defending champion Alice in an exciting encounter.
In the other semi-final, Elise beat Jo-Ann to secure her place in the final.
Playing in her first zone final, Mariska delivered an excellent performance against the more experienced Alice to claim the coveted title of zone champion.
The third- and fourth-place play-off saw Alice defeat Jo-Ann.
The men’s section featured players from Newcastle Bowling Club, Volksrust Bowling Club and Dundee Bowling Club.
The qualifiers were:
- John Douthwaite, Fritz Botha and Bennie van Vuuren (Newcastle Bowling Club)
- Tony de Pooter and Abraham Louw (Volksrust Bowling Club)
- Jacques Bierbaum, Des Johnson, Greg Conolly and Ian de Jager (Dundee Bowling Club).
In the preliminary play-off round, Tony defeated Fritz to advance to the quarter finals, where he was beaten by John.
The remaining quarter final results saw Jacques defeat Abraham, Des edge past Bennie in a closely contested match, and Ian overcome Greg.
The semi-finals saw John defeat Jacques, while Ian beat fellow Dundee Bowling Club player Des.
In the final, John produced a strong performance to defeat a determined Ian and retain his title.
Jacques claimed third place after beating Des in the play-off.
It was encouraging to see several new bowlers take part in the competition.
Their participation provided valuable experience and allowed them to gain insight into the demands of competing at a higher level.
