‘Poolman’ Chris an all rounder for all seasons

Chris this year marks his 20 years in the area of servicing and maintaining pools and doing general home maintenance in his own methodical way.

Chris Keulder can relate a funny story as to how he met his beloved wife, Heila, in Plettenberg Bay.

‘I was an estate agent back then. This nice lady was shown into my office enquiring about a flat. Then the phone on my desk rang. As I picked it up I fumbled with the cord that became entangled with a jug of water that I always keep on my desk.

“To my horror, the jug overturned on my client, leaving her clothes drenched.” Chris said he turned red in embarrassment and knowing he had lost a deal, offered to take the lady home to change.

“She agreed, we went in for coffee and the rest was like a movie. We have been married for 28 years!”

Born in Zeerust, Chris signed up with the police and worked as a flying squad member in Johannesburg until 1974 when he realised the Big Smoke was no place to raise his two children.

“I was always good with my hands and loved fixing anything. I am very meticulous and despise a slap dash approach. So, I got a job with the grain co-op in the Northern Cape and travelled around the area. Later, I had a complete change in direction and became an estate agent in Plett.”

He and Heila later moved to Amanzimtoti where he bought a swimming pool business but weary of growing crime there, decided to look elsewhere.

“Heila has family in Dundee so while visiting one Sunday, 20 years ago,  it was suggested we move here. We called an estate agent right away, and boom, she showed us a house, and we bought it without hesitation.”

That’s when Chris started SANWA pools in Dundee and has since flourished, building up a reputation for his work and attention to detail.

“I always make sure every job is supervised and every customer first gets a detailed written quotation so they do not get any surprises at the end of the job.”

Chris offers weekly servicing of pools or once-off clean-ups, water balancing, repairs to leaks and pumps, light fittings and much more including various tiling options.

With spring now in, those with pools should consider giving Chris a call to ensure that this summer goes with a splash.
