Nutrition campaign encourages healthier choices in Sibongile and Dundee

Residents and learners were encouraged to eat healthily, grow their own vegetables and take charge of their wellbeing during National Nutrition Week activities.

Community members, including schoolchildren, were encouraged to make healthier food choices, grow their own vegetables and undergo regular health screenings during National Nutrition Week activities in Sibongile and Dundee.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health marked the awareness week with a programme at Livangeli Hall in Sibongile, highlighting the importance of healthy eating, disease prevention and food security.

Ward councillor Spha Kheswa encouraged residents to become role models for healthy living and grow their own vegetables to improve access to fresh produce.

ZB Seme from the district health office and N Vilakazi from the Department of Agriculture also addressed attendees on nutrition, healthy lifestyles and disease prevention.

Residents were urged to undergo regular blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checks to identify potential health risks early and ensure they receive appropriate care.

Growing healthier communities

Local vegetable growers supported the initiative by selling fresh produce, including spinach, lettuce and carrots, helping small-scale growers while making nutritious food more accessible.

Learners from Livangeli Primary School added to the day’s activities with singing and dancing.

A further programme was held at Battlefields Primary School on Friday, October 16, where government departments continued promoting the importance of healthy eating at home and school.

Community organisation Siphuthando NGO also plays an important role in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition, working alongside nutritionists to provide meals to vulnerable and nutritionally at-risk residents.

The partnership between healthcare professionals, government departments and community organisations helps translate nutrition awareness into practical support, improving food security, dignity and health outcomes for those most in need.

“The Dundee Nutrition Team acknowledges Siphuthando NGO as a valuable partner in advancing community nutrition and supporting nutritionally at-risk individuals through meal provision and community-based interventions,” a spokesperson said.
