Glencoe’s Sarel Cillliers learners out to build bridges

Sport against Volksrust will take place at home this coming weekend. Control tests will begin soon and the learners are encouraged to start preparing early.

After practicing and refining their design, the Sarel Cilliers bridge-building teams left for Harrismith to take part in the annual bridge-building competition.
Each team has three learners who must build their bridge within the allocated time and with the materials provided.
The completed bridge is scored on the weight and design of the bridge, and then tested for weight tolerance. After winning the international competition last year, the Sarel Cilliers teams were under added pressure to perform well this year.
Competing for the first time, the junior Grade 10 team came 13th in the competition, with the more seasoned Grade 11s coming second. The Grade 12 team won the competition with their bridge, managing to take a nail-biting total weight of 120kg before breaking. The winning team will now take part in the international bridge-building competition in Pretoria later this year.
Congratulations to Mr du Plessis, Mr A Slabbert and the learners, who are certainly proving to be tough adversaries in this discipline. Best of luck for later in the year.
Sarel Cilliers played sport at Pionier High School in Vryheid on Saturday, where the netball girls played extremely well, with many of the teams holding their own on the court. The U/14 team won 11-7, U/16s lost 2-46, second team won 23-12 and first team lost 25-37. The boys’ first team hockey had an excellent match and won 9-0. The rugby U/14s lost 12-47, U/15s won 46-5, U/16s lost 37-42, third team (Dream Team) won 21-15, second team won 47-5 and first team lost 12-18. It was a seasonably hot day and temperatures were high, but everyone enjoyed the day out.
