Worker run over and killed in horrific accident at entrance to Glencoe

A worker, who was cleaning sand off the road, was run over and killed this afternoon when a car veered out of control at the entrance to Glencoe.

Ironically, the municipal workers were cleaning sand off the road that had been washed down from a gravel road leading up from the main road just before the Pieter van der Berg Street turn-off.

Witnesses said the car had raced through the safety cones before hitting the worker, careening off the road, and crashing into a thick bush. According to those at the scene, the driver is alleged to have fled the scene leaving behind a passenger who has been taken to hospital to be treated for injuries.

SAPS and other services are on the scene. The road was closed to traffic.  Residents had earlier appealed to the municipality to remove the sand from the road for fear of it causing an accident.
