Mayor welcomes Dundee July ‘home stay’ initiative to boost local tourism

The fashion show at the horse racing track on July 20 will start at 13:00 and will see 150 models and designers taking to the catwalk.

This week’s Dundee July, which gets underway on Thursday, will also benefit local people who have opened their homes to guests for ‘an air B&B’ home stay’ experience.
14 homes in Dundee and Glencoe have been earmarked by the municipality and given the green light to host tourists who will be here for the big event.
The homestay accommodation venues will add to the formal B&Bs and traditional accommodation establishments that will be full until at least Sunday.

The homeowners were visited by a municipal delegation last week that included Mayor Siyabonga Ndlovu and Planning & Development director Bongani Hlatshwayo.
The mayor was impressed by the lengths the residents went to in a bid to give visitors the best stay-over experience possible and in that way, cement Endumeni’s reputation as a tourist town.
Some of the homes can accommodate up to seven or more people.
It is estimated that the Dundee July will create 1246 temporary direct and indirect jobs in the accommodation, transport, security, hospitality and other sectors.

Mayor Ndlovu said that although the Dundee July attracts domestic and international tourists, poor road networks have often undermined the tourism sector.
“We have issued a call to both the provincial and national governments to assist us.”
The Dundee July is a collaborative effort among different departments and private sector sponsors, with the backing of the local and district municipality and KZN Department of Sport.
The fashion show village will be co-ordinated by the Arts & Culture Branch under the theme ‘African Jewel’.
Before this, a street carnival from the municipality to Sibongile on July 19 will include a motorcade, brass band, Indian dancers, stilt walkers, traditional dancers and performing artists.
