Warm and sunny conviviality is the ideal potjie recipe in Dundee

There was R5000 at stake and all the money raised was going to the Dundee Adult Care Centre.

There are many theories when it comes to preparing South African ‘potjiekos’.
Translated literally to ‘small pot food’, a potjie is as South African as a braai.
The trick, so we were told at The Shed’s first potjiekos competition, is ‘preparation’ – with the vegetables, meat and other secret ingredients cooked very slowly over a simmering steady heat for several hours.
“To rush is to die,” said one earnest chef. One could not argue with these experts who gathered for the competition from early Saturday.

But it was not all about the food…
Preparation, the atmosphere of the individual stands, and the general conviviality of those representing the ‘pot’ were also taken into account by the judges.
There were some interesting entries…

Delicious aromas…

From the venison dish by the Dundee Adult Care Centre themselves, Case Tractor’s curry pot, Round Table’s seafood entry, and the variety of dishes prepared by the local bikers’ group.
Pro Nobis Special School used the opportunity to showcase their arts and crafts, while entertainer Zander Human attracted lots of applause.
After much consideration, it was the Dundee Adult Care Centre that took home first prize, with Dormehl Property Dundee second.
It was a warm and sunny Saturday, and The Shed staff (Vlooi, Crystal and Jordan) and team were thanked for hosting the day, which saw great camaraderie among the townsfolk.
