Two cash-in-transit suspects killed in Wasbank shootout

Police foil alleged heist gang linked to six robberies.

Two suspected cash-in-transit robbers were shot dead during a shootout with police in Wasbank on Thursday afternoon,  May 22.

SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the operation intelligence received regarding suspects wanted in connection with at least six cash-in-transit robberies. The alleged crimes took place in KwaDukuza, Verulam, Nyoni, Greytown, Phoenix, and Langslaagte between June 2022 and March 2025.

The suspects were cornered at a house believed to be their hideout. Police said that upon identifying themselves, the suspects opened fire on officers, prompting a shootout. Both suspects were killed during the exchange.

One of the men, aged 43, was wanted on a warrant of arrest for possession of explosives and ammunition. Two firearms were recovered at the scene.

No police officers were injured in the operation.

Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing as they probe links between the suspects and other serious crimes in the province.
