Dundee family loses home after fire sparked by power return
Power returned after load reduction and sparked a fire, leaving a Lindelani family with nothing.
A Lindelani family in Sibongile location has been left destitute after their home caught fire on Monday evening, July 14, when electricity was restored following a period of load reduction.
According to neighbours, the fire broke out shortly after power returned, engulfing the Zulu household.
It is believed that a power surge may have triggered the fire in the fridge, which spread rapidly. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the family lost all their belongings in the blaze.
Community members have since rallied around the family, appealing for donations of clothing, food, and household items to help them rebuild their lives.

Municipal officials are investigating the incident, and residents have been urged to switch off appliances during load reduction periods to avoid similar tragedies. Load reduction was introduced into the Sibongile area earlier this month following cable theft at sub sub-substation.
A municipal spokesperson said load reduction will continue until the stolen cable is replaced to reduce the load on the remaining cable.
Load reduction occurs from 17:30 to 19:00 and 19:00 to 21:00 – depending on where one lives.
