Thirty-three motorists were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol during a Road Traffic Inspectorate operation in Dundee on Saturday night.

The operation coincided with the Dundee July weekend, when thousands of visitors flocked to the town for horse racing, fashion shows and music events at the Endumeni Racecourse and Battlefields Country Lodge.

Former mayor among those arrested

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, one of those arrested was a former Endumeni mayor. The department did not name the person.

Officials said not all of the arrests were linked directly to the Dundee July events, as the operation targeted motorists across the town.

Court appearances expected

Motorists who were formally charged were expected to appear in court today.

The Dundee operation formed part of a wider road safety campaign, with a similar Road Traffic Inspectorate operation also conducted in Newcastle on Friday evening.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid drinking and driving, warning that enforcement operations will continue across the province to improve road safety.
