Police apprehend suspected copper thief

The 21-year-old suspect was arrested and charged for being in possession of possible stolen copper after a tip-off was made to police.

Newcastle detectives are investigating a case of the possession of suspected stolen goods on Drakensberg Road in Barry Hertzog Park on the morning of March 12.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, said the complainant had received a call from a local security company informing him of a man, seen in the area, carrying a suitcase containing copper.

“The police went to the location where they discovered an unknown male carrying a bag containing shards of copper pipes. They stopped the suspect and asked him to account for the copper pipes and why they were in his possession.”

The 21-year-old was apprehended and charged.

He appeared in Newcastle Magistrate Court on March 12.
