Police arrest one suspect linked to attempted murder

He was then taken to Madadeni Hospital, where it was noted that he had sustained severe head and face injuries.

Newcastle detectives are investigating a case of attempted murder in Lennoxton, in the early hours of March 30.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, said the victim had been involved in an altercation at a local bar and was asked to leave.

“He left the bar on foot only to be accosted by the suspects who assaulted him with hockey sticks,” she said.

He walked up Osborne Road where he collapsed on a footpath.

A neighbourhood watch official who notified the police found him. He was taken to Madadeni Hospital, where he was treated for severe head and face injuries.

Four people have since been arrested.

One suspect (21) was formally charged with attempted murder on April 6.

“The other three were released from police custody, as an investigation still has to be conducted concerning the active role they played in the attack,” clarified Arumugam.

The suspect was detained pending a court appearance scheduled for April 8.

However, because he has a medical condition he was taken to a medical facility under a police guard, causing his court appearance to be remanded in his absence.

“He is currently still under police guard at Mediclinic, and the investigating officer confirmed that the case might again be postponed while waiting for him to appear in person.”

Anyone with information about the attack can contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer, CJD Meyer, at 079 5000 546.
