Accused in taxi rank shooting appears in court
He abandoned his bail application.
The suspect in last week’s taxi rank shooting appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Monday (May 19).
The man stands accused of shooting a woman five or six times at the Estcourt taxi rank on Friday afternoon (May 16). The woman died at the scene; it is alleged that the deceased was his lover.
The alleged shooter handed himself in at Estcourt police station.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan commented that a 38-year-old man handed himself over to police on Friday afternoon and appeared briefly in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he abandoned his bail application.

“He stands accused of shooting and killing his lover at the Alexandra Road taxi rank. The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds,” added Khan.
The deceased has since been identified as Thiwane Mthetwa (37).
