Update: 5 men in police custody after gun battle in CBD

A vehicle and two pistols were recovered by police.

Ladysmith KZN: This morning (August 6), five men stormed into a shop at the Plaza and attempted to rob the place. However, thanks to the swift response of reaction wardens from NN Alarms, the robbers’ plans were quickly foiled.

As they tried to make their getaway, armed NN Alarms reaction wardens sprang into action, chasing one of the men through the streets. The man, desperate to escape, opened fire on his pursuers in Forbes Street and the security vehicle was hit a number of times. According to a security company official, who did not want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, the vehicle was hit 14 times.

The reaction wardens retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle, the man was shot. When police arrived at the scene, the man was found seriously wounded and lying in a pool of blood. He received medical attention from EMS paramedics, before being taken to hospital.
