A gang of around 20 armed men stormed Transnet’s security office in a brazen copper cable heist early on Monday morning, September 8, with one man later arrested and a vehicle transporting stolen cable seized.

Police spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam confirmed that the gang forced their way into the security operations room.

“They cut the lock and chain on the main door, confronted the Marshal Night operations commander at gunpoint, and disarmed him,” she said.

A security officer stationed at a monitoring post who witnessed the robbery alerted the controller, who called the police.

A car chase ensued on the Newcastle–Madadeni Road, which resulted in a white Isuzu truck carrying the stolen cable being intercepted by the SAPS Dog Unit.

The driver was arrested.

The injured guard received medical treatment at the scene before being transported to Newcastle Mediclinic.
