Security team apprehends suspect after community alert

A swift community alert and security response led to the arrest of a theft suspect in Newcastle after he attempted to flee.

A man was arrested on Tuesday after he was allegedly caught in the process of removing items from a property. When confronted, he allegedly attempted to stab the property owner and flee the scene.

Mornè Potgieter of Ithemba Security said their armed response unit reacted swiftly to an emergency alert received via a community WhatsApp group.

“A community member reported the suspect inside his yard after the suspect had allegedly taken items from his property,” said Potgieter.

During the chase, the suspect dropped several items believed to have been taken from the property.

A ‘be on the lookout’ alert was immediately shared across community safety groups.

“While our response officers were patrolling the area, we received another call from a client reporting a suspicious person who matched the suspect’s description,” added Potgieter.

Security officials responded swiftly and apprehended the suspect, confirming him to be the same person involved in the first incident.

The suspect was handed over to the Newcastle SAPS for further investigation.

Potgieter thanked his team for their dedication and rapid response, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

“Excellent teamwork and dedication from our members and the community! Your continued efforts make a real difference in protecting our neighbourhoods,” Potgieter concluded.
