A man was killed near Newcastle Taxi City this afternoon (February 10), following what is believed to have been an incident of mob justice.

Imraan Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighter’s Task Team (CCPA) said bystanders witnessed the man stab someone in the neck in front of a supermarket at Taxi City before fleeing towards Trim Park.

Members of the community then gave chase. It is alleged that he was brutally assaulted when they caught up with him.

According to Ghafoor, he managed to escape into the river, but was eventually pulled out of the water by his assailants and was left for dead under a tree in Trim Park.

Police, who attended the scene, said a postmortem would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The deceased had sustained extensive head injuries.

The stabbing victim was receiving medical attention at the Newcastle Clinic at the time of publishing.
