Madadeni Court sentences man to 20 years for rape

A well-planned police investigation helped secure the conviction and hefty prison sentence.

A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for raping a woman in May 2023.

The Madadeni Regional Court handed down the sentence on February 12, ensuring justice for the victim.

Attacked for saying “NO”

According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the victim claimed she was walking home from her boyfriend’s house on May 28, 2023, when she was approached by an unknown man.

He stopped her and proposed a romantic relationship, which she declined.

“When she rejected him, he became very angry, punched her in the face with a closed fist and then proceeded to rape her,” explained Arumugam.

The incident was reported to the police, who worked tirelessly to track down and arrest the suspect.

Investigation leads to successful conviction

Arumugam commended the investigating officer, Constable DG Mtambo, for making sure the perpetrator was brought to book for his crime.

“Her dedication to ensuring justice is what ultimately led to the successful arrest and conviction of the accused,” said Arumugam.

Lieutenant Colonel SL Chapi (commander of the Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit) also praised Mtambo for her commitment and professionalism. “Her hard work played a key role in securing the conviction and sentence,” he concluded.
