After the murder, the accused allegedly went to a liquor store and hung out with people as if nothing had happened.

A man accused of killing his girlfriend in Peacetown appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning (May 19).

Suspect visits liquor store after the crime?

The 27-year-old accused is alleged to have assaulted and stabbed his girlfriend on Saturday evening (May 16), leaving her dead in his bedroom. After the incident, he reportedly went to a nearby liquor store and spent time with other people as if nothing had happened.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident, saying that police arrested a suspect in connection with the murder. “Information at hand suggests that he assaulted his lover. She was found in a bedroom on Sunday morning,” said Khan.

Community protests outside court

Members of the Peacetown community staged a protest outside the court, saying that bail should not be granted to the suspect.

Bail was denied and the case was postponed to June 23.
