3 arrests after Newcastle hijacking

Police also recovered the vehicle and firearm that were allegedly stolen.

Three men were arrested on Tuesday (May 26) in connection with a hijacking that took place in the Newcastle CBD on May 21.

According to law enforcement sources, who were not authorised to speak to the media, a case was opened at Newcastle SAPS after the victim was allegedly assaulted and his vehicle and firearm stolen by the hijackers.

Joint operation leads to arrests

Following information received about one of the men believed to have been involved, members of the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, Newcastle detectives, Newcastle K9 Unit (D Shift) and Newcastle SAPS (D Shift) launched an operation.

The team traced and arrested three men in Siyahlala-la.

Vehicle and firearm recovered

During the operation, officers recovered the victim’s vehicle as well as the firearm believed to have been stolen during the incident.

The suspects will be appearing in court soon, while police investigations continue.
