Municipality strengthens support for local artists
Newcastle Municipality is launching an initiative to support artists through exhibitions, skills development and economic opportunities.
Local artists will benefit from a community initiative aimed at promoting talent, unlocking economic opportunities and strengthening support for Newcastle’s creative sector.
The initiative was announced last week when Newcastle Municipality’s Youth Office met with various local artists.
According to a statement released on its official Facebook page, community engagement remains a key tool in advancing local talent and strengthening the cultural fabric of the city.
“The programme mobilises artists, non-profit organisations and commercial businesses to build a sustainable creative economy that contributes directly to job creation and youth empowerment,” the statement read.
Programme creates platforms for growth
The municipality explained that the initiative would establish formal platforms for artists to connect with audiences and access practical opportunities.
“These include curated exhibitions, public art activations and direct linkages to municipal supply chain opportunities across events, branding and infrastructure beautification projects. In doing so, the programme drives deeper appreciation for local work while generating measurable economic benefits through increased visitor traffic, local spending, and expanded market exposure for both emerging and established artists.”
Beyond exposure, the municipality said it was also implementing practical interventions to secure long-term impact. These include access to exhibition spaces in municipal facilities, structured networking sessions with established industry practitioners, accredited skills development workshops in business management and digital marketing, and direct market access through municipal events and partnerships.
According to the municipality, the initiative forms part of its mandate for youth development and creative industry support, aligned with the 2035 Local Economic Development Strategy and Vision.
Mayor highlights commitment to creative economy
Speaking about the initiative, Mayor Dube reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to turning plans into action.
“This administration converts policy into platforms and opportunities. Engaging local artists is not charity, it is economic strategy. We are terminating the era where talent exists without support. We are building dignity, opportunity and pride by activating public spaces, integrating artists into municipal procurement where possible, and ensuring access to real economic participation. The standard is clear and consistent: creativity must translate into livelihoods for our young people,” said Dube.
The municipality concluded that its Youth Office would continue implementing targeted programmes to engage local artists, assist with opportunities, promote accountability, and support sustainable development within the creative sector.
