uThukela to appear before Legislature following failed hearing
Today's hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for leadership from the district municipality to respond to concerns raised.
uThukela District Municipality leaders are expected to appear before the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature’s Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Portfolio Committee today (August 28) for a Section 132 hearing following a failed sitting at the municipality’s offices in Ladysmith.
Today’s hearing will be held in the Main Chamber of the KZN Legislature.
Failed hearing in Ladysmith
The committee was scheduled to hold a Section 132 hearing with uThukela District Municipality in Ladysmith on August 12.
However, the hearing could not proceed after the ‘appropriate leadership’ could not join the meeting. Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala did not join the sitting due to medical issues, while Deputy Mayor MC Mkhize was in Durban and could not even join via ‘virtual’ platforms due to other commitments.
Concerns over audit performance
According to the Auditor-General, uThukela District Municipality’s audit opinion has remained qualified for seven consecutive years, with limited improvement in its internal controls.
According to a statement issued by the KZN Legislature, today’s hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for political leadership from the municipality to respond to concerns raised and account for the steps being taken to improve the municipality’s financial management and audit performance.
