First full, annual bowls cup since 2019 rolls in success

The weekend attracted 24 teams and 96 players from around KZN and further afield, participating on Saturday and Sunday in mixed weather conditions - sun, rain, wind and back to sun again.

For the first time since 2019, Dundee Bowling Club hosted a full, annual Friedman Douthwaite Bunge Cup.
This was the 73rd edition.
The weekend attracted 24 teams and 96 players from around KZN and further afield, participating on Saturday and Sunday in mixed weather conditions – sun, rain, wind and back to sun again.
It was Miskiet Ferreira and his team from Empangeni who clinched the trophy and the R10,000 first prize.
The (in)famous Douthwaite brothers of Newcastle, John and Trevor and their team, took second prize. John marked his 50th consecutive Friedman Cup, which is a remarkable achievement!
Bowls Club president Greg Conolly thanked the players for their support, as well as his committee and members for their hard work and catering contributions.
He made special mention of Oom Dougie, Joe Khumalo and the committee of the Country Club for assisting in making sure that the greens were in tip-top condition.
“To all the sponsors – Buffalo Coal, Orange Grove Dairy, Douthwaithe brothers, Mbube Security and all the others for their contributions – many thanks.
The Friedman weekend is certainly a boost for the town, as players and their families book into bed-and-breakfast establishments, which in turn helps these small businesses,” said Greg.
