German NPO visits children’s home

Since the organisation is small, they only have four projects which they look after

Michael Schickel from the ‘Friends of Africa’ organisation visited Inkululeko Children’s Home on Monday. Michael started out with a small group of people who are the founders of this non-profit organisation that is based in Germany. The organisation was founded on April 10, 2007, by Michael and 15 other people; now they have 40 active members. The dream started when Michael visited West Africa Guinea for a workshop. While touring through Guinea, they visited a school with 500 learners and noticed that the school was in desperate need of finances and maintenance. This sparked the aim to assist struggling schools and children’s homes. Since the organisation is small, they only have four projects which they look after; of which Inkululeko Children’s Home is one.

Michael is an avid drummer and every year the organisation hosts music festivals that include a variety of bands. The festivals last a whole weekend per event. The proceeds of these festivals are donated to their different projects. They are currently active in Guinea, Ghana, Uganda and Vryheid. Michael and his wife have friends in Vryheid, and they also knew the previous couple who introduced them to Inkululeko. They thought it was a positive initiative and therefore included the home in their annual donations. Friends of Africa were also responsible for the erection of a jungle gym, as well as the conversion of the garage into offices – to name but a few of the transformations at the home. At this stage, their financial contributions make a huge difference to the home and the children. Michael explains that there are donors in Germany who earmark their donations exclusively for Inkululeko Children’s Home. Furthermore, he says with emotion that it is rewarding to see how the children flourish – knowing that they play a small part in their happiness. Miriam Leveridge expressed her gratitude towards Michael and the organisation, saying that it doesn’t matter how small a contribution is; to them, it is huge. They are grateful for every little thing that God provides, whether it is money, clothes, food or toys.

“Thanks to organisations like these and the community of Vryheid. We, at Inkululeko, are blessed and the children don’t have to go hungry for a single day,” says Miriam
