uThukela staff on strike again

The road is currently closed

uThukela staff are once again protesting in front of their offices in Lyell/Forbes Street this morning (March 23). They were on strike yesterday as well, with the protest ending at around noon.

Tyres are being burned outside the uThukela offices.

The staff say that agreements were made, but then broken, and that’s why they are ‘downing tools’. One staff member commented that when they ask the municipal manager (MM) for answers, he simply ignores them.

According to DA Councillor Thys Janse van Rensburg, records show that it’s now the fourth illegal strike undertaken by uThukela staff. In the aftermath of the last illegal strike, he officially asked the MM what steps would be taken to prevent this from happening again. Not only was he not afforded an answer, in contradiction to the official standing rules, but according to him, it seems that nothing was done to improve labour relations at the district municipality.

“This inaction and paralysis has become a hallmark of IFP leadership at uThukela,” said Cllr van Rensburg.

Public Safety and police are monitoring the situation. The road has been closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
