Youngsters give veterans a good run
Bruce Marx prevailed to beat defending stroke-play champion Dr Sifiso Kunene, for Bruce to be crowned the 2023 match-play champion.
Dundee Country Club hosted the annual Club Match-Play Championships over the weekend.
Some exciting golf was played in both the men’s and ladies’ divisions.
Two up-and-coming golfers outdid themselves in the quarter finals and semi-finals to give the veterans a run for their money.
In the quarter finals, young Lucas Meintjies from Dundee High School lost ‘3 and 2′ to top golfer Dr Sifiso Kunene on Saturday.
Fellow youngster KK Khumalo, who won the B Division in the Stroke-Play Championships, lost to Gene Robson on the last hole for Gene to be crowned the men’s B Division winner over Neels van Dyk in the final.
In the ladies’ section, defending match-play champion Hlengiwe Hlongwane played Naomi van Huysteen in the semi-finals and won on the first extra hole to play club president Debbie Catlett.
Debbie was ultimately crowned the ladies’ champion.
In the men’s A Division, there was a close encounter in both semi-finals.
Dr Sifiso Kunene beat Jurie Engelbrecht ‘3 and 2’, while Bruce Marx overcame veteran Jo Khumalo on the first extra play-off hole for them to play each other in the final.
