Fire & rescue team pleads for a specialised vehicle

Currently, only one such vehicle is available and has to cover the whole of the Zululand District

Frans Madela from AbaQulusi Fire & Rescue organised a demonstration at the Cecil Emmett sports grounds on Thursday. Different sectors of emergency services also participated in the demo by AbaQulusi Fire & Rescue, which specialises in Rapid Intervention Vehicles (RIVs) and rescue equipment. The aim was to re-enact an accident scene and show the importance of having the correct equipment in order to save lives. Madela invited council members from AbaQulusi, Dumbe, Pongola and Zululand District so they could see the benefit of a fully-rigged rescue vehicle and to persuade them to invest in this life-saving vehicle. The same vehicle also carries about 250 litres of water with a pressure pump to help during veld fires. Currently, only one such vehicle is available and has to cover the whole of the Zululand District. Apart from the government RIV, there is another privately-owned RIV at KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services. However, due to other obligations, it is not always available when needed.
