Littering is getting worse say irate residents

Long-time resident, Jeanne-Mari Neefs (née Wessels), approached the Advertiser to voice her concerns about the town she has called home for all her life.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, Newcastle was known for its clean streets, beautiful river banks and fresh air.

Today, however, it is a whole different story…

The stench of sewage permeates the air along with pollution and other associated harmful fumes…the streets are dirty; the rivers are covered with vegetation; the play parks are almost ‘extinct’…

Long-time resident, Jeanne-Mari Neefs (née Wessels), approached the Advertiser to voice her concerns about the town she has called home for all her life.

“I was born and raised in Newcastle, and over the years it has become just filthy!”

“Our town’s infrastructure is broken; litter is everywhere; take-away dishes, paper, and smashed bottles are strewn all over the place, especially in the vicinity of the Newcastle Taxi rank and it’s getting worse by the day,” she said.

“We were once known as the cleanest town but now driving through our town is a disgusting experience.”

“I have seen municipal workers out and about a few times, but they only pick up a few pieces of paper here and there – not nearly enough to make a difference and it seems that people have just kind of gotten used to the filth. This year seems to be particularly bad compared to other years; our town feels dirtier than ever before. Another issue is the increase in homeless people, who also contribute to litter and crime.”

Wessels said she grew up in Newcastle and cannot ‘believe how backwards and dirty this place has become’.

“I believe if everyone took responsibility for their hometown and started cleaning up after themselves, we could make a difference. People should become more aware of this issue and start to play an active role in changing things. We cannot sit back and wait for someone else to get this done; we need our clean town back!” she concluded.
