Lives of needy family to be transformed thanks to SAPS home building project
A family living in extreme poverty will soon be living a happy and healthy lifestyle as the Amajuba District police have started building them a brand new home.
A needy Osizweni family in the Blaaubosch area are about to have their lives transformed thanks to a house building project launched by the Amajuba District SAPS, led by District Commissioner, Major General Fred Alexander.
Lizzy Arumugam, of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Department, said a family living in extreme poverty was identified by Warrant Officer Sipho Zondi, the co-ordinator of the Osizweni Social Crime Prevention Unit.
The outreach project was then taken over by the Amajuba District SAPS in July as part of their 67 minutes in honour of Mandela Day.
The team first visited the family where groceries were delivered. Building material was dropped off at the site and on October 11, the team started building the new home’s foundation after Major General Alexander conducted the sod turning ceremony.
Leading by example, Major Alexander, Brigadier Vassi Naidoo (Newcastle’s new Station Commissioner), and Osizweni Station Commissioner, Colonel Mike Nkosi, exchanged their uniforms for boiler suits as they got their hands dirty.
Arumugam explained that the project is aimed at assisting the less fortunate and restoring their human dignity.
“The state of the house on site was not suitable for human habitation; the shack door, made of corrugated iron, could not even close properly or lock; the roof was leaking; there were no concrete floors; there was a pit toilet without a lockable door; and they had no beds to sleep on.”
Soon, however, the family will have a house they can call a home.
Blaaubosch will be swarming with police presence for the remainder of the project and Arumugam, believes that this will lead to a decrease in criminal activity as the area is notorious for gangster activities.
Arumugam also congratulated the Amajuba District team, which scooped the most prizes at the recent KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Annual Excellence Awards, which held at the ICC in Durban on September 29.
“Most of these prizes were for the Amajuba team’s commitment and for always going the extra mile, ensuring the safety of the community.”
