Ward 11 voters to choose new councillor

CoGTA encourages community members to come in numbers to elect their chosen candidate

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will hold by-elections in Hlathikhulu Ward 11 today (December 13) so the community can elect a new councillor.

The position opened when ANC Cllr Nosipho Hlongwane suddenly resigned in October, and party spokesperson Bheki Khanyile strongly condemned her decision.

Before December 13 was decided on as by-election day, Inkosilangalibalele Local Municipality deployed speaker SW Khumalo to temporarily take care of the ward while waiting for the IEC to decide on a by-election date.

The community of Ward 11 will be able to use their constitutional right to elect the candidate they prefer.

For the past few weeks, political parties have been in and out of Hlathikhulu, campaigning.

Top leaders from two big parties, the ANC and the IFP, were seen in the area conducting door-to-door campaigns. KZN ANC chair Siboniso Duma, his deputy Nomagugu Simelane and ANC deputy secretary Sipho Hlomuka visited the area; as did IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa and KZN IFP chairperson Thami Ntuli.

In a statement, the Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) said that the province of KZN will host three by-elections today: Inkosi Langalibalele Ward 11, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Ward 23 and EThekwini Metro Ward 101. KZN CoGTA urged residents to take advantage of this opportunity.
