Mayor visits school inside Estcourt prison

The school promised the mayor that their matric class of 2024 will also obtain a 100% pass rate

Sicebengolwazi Secondary School has thanked Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza for the visit and support. Sicebengolwazi Secondary is part of the Estcourt Correctional Centre.

This comes after the mayor on Thursday (February 2024) took his back-to-school programme to prison. This initiative aims to reach out to all schools under Inkosi Langalibalelele Local Municipality; the mayor has already visited a number of them.

School principal Miss R Radebe said that even though it was the first time the mayor has set foot in the prison, it is not the first time he has ‘laid a hand’ on the institution. “Sicebengolwazi Secondary is a school known to many in Estcourt, as it is performing very well. When the results were released in January, we received a certificate from the mayor that recognised our good performance. Of all the schools that fall under the municipality, Sicebengolwazi took first place. That recognition is evidence that the school is working and made the municipality notice the school,” said Radebe.

Mayor Myeza conveyed encouraging words to the inmates, who are also students, telling them that their lives are not over and there is hope that when they finish their sentences, they will be an asset to the community. Myeza commended the matric class of 2023 for successfully obtaining a 100% pass rate, saying this means that when they get out of prison, they will be different people who will be a help to the community.
