Special Council Meeting held to remove Newcastle’s Deputy Mayor

The Newcastle municipality convened a special meeting to correct the irregularities from March meeting where council moved to oust Musa 'Sugar' Thwala.

Tensions reached boiling point during a special council meeting held by the municipality on Thursday (April 18) that saw some parties threatening to walk out questioning the validity of processes surrounding the ousting of Newcastle Municipality Deputy Mayor Musa Thwala.

From the outset, it was clear that this was no ordinary council meeting given what had transpired following Thwala’s expulsion at a council meeting that formed part of the IDP/strategic planning workshop, which took place on March 28 at the opulent Drakensberg Sun resort.

Thwala has since contested the removal by taking  the municipality to the High Court to contest the action’s legality. There should only be two or three urgent matters on the agenda for a special council meeting, but Thwala alleged that the meeting was conducted with multiple procedural irregularities because there were nine items on theagenda when he was removed.

During the meeting, TSSA Deputy President and PR Councillor Andile Nkosi, in his capacity as Team Sugar SA representative in the council nominated TSSA General Secretary  and fellow defector Nondumiso Masondo , for Thwala’s seat at exco.

Masondo was formally elected into EXCO leaving the public to wonder for how long as according to Thwala, the three defectors, Andile Nkosi, Nondumiso Masondo, and Cyprian Ngcobo, will face TSSA disciplinary procedures for their vote against him and going against the TSSA constitution.
