Municipal workers land in hot water

Images of municipal workers allegedly drinking at a nearby park during working hours surfaces on social; media last week, sparking heated debates among residents.

The photos show four municipal employees seated on a park bench with what appear to be alcoholic beverages on the table.

The immediate uproar from residents on social media prompted the municipality to make a statement addressing the incident.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the Newcastle Municipality’s Media Communications team, on behalf of Municipal Manager Zamani Mcineka, said that he (Mcineka) ‘is fully aware of the photos that are making the rounds on social media.’

He also expressed his ‘dismay and condemnation of the employees’ actions’, which he said jeopardised the integrity and professionalism of local officials.

“Consuming alcohol during working hours is not only a violation of our organisational policies and code of ethics, but it also undermines the trust and confidence of the community we serve,” stated the communications unit.

“Immediate investigations are underway and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against those found responsible.l
