Itec Freespool throws down the gauntlet at NFWAA Atlas Towlines League

The second round of the NFWAA Atlas Towlines League took place at Richgate Park with anglers eager to wet their lines after almost a month's break due to fasting by members of the Hindu faith.

Most clubs used the break to recruit new members and strengthen their squads for the remainder of the season.

The weather conditions were favourable, and the fish seemed to be on the bite.

This was evident by the many keep nets at the weighing station.

Itec Freespool turned the tables on current champions and league one winner, Ladysmith, with a 104 to 96 point victory to claim first place.

Endumeni finished the best of the rest with 39 points, closely followed by Docrats with 38, Riverside 19, Ace Aqua 18, Glencoe 9, and Chelmsford 3.

Raees Kaji of Endumeni caught the heaviest carp, 3.91 kg, while Morris Thompson caught the heaviest non-scaled specimen, an 8.27 kg barbel.

Both anglers received a miniature trophy and R250 each courtesy of Atlas Towlines.

Angler of the year table

  • After two rounds, the Itec Newcastle angler of the year log table is led by Ramil Juggan of Ladysmith on 20 points, followed by his teammate Udien Govinder on 19.
  • Brady Dunn of Itec Freespool is third overall but leads the juniors by 18 points.
  • The female category is led by Talia Veran of Riverside on 7 points, with Betty Bothma of Chelmsford in second place on 5 points.
  • Betty’s husband, Piet Bothma, is the forerunner in the seniors with 11 points.

Based on current form and results, the top contenders for the league title are Ladysmith and Itec Freespool.

The rest of the chasing pack will have to fish out of their socks if they want to have any hope of bagging this title.
