Theku Mall opens its doors with huge fanfare
The highly anticipated mall officially opened its doors on Thursday (October 31).
The joyous occasion began when Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube conducted the ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the official opening. The newly renovated state-of-the-art shopping center received a new lease on life after the July 2021 lootings that gutted Theku Plaza leaving many Osizweni customers stranded and many workers unemployed.
The mall is set to breathe new life into the local economy, creating jobs and stimulating growth in Osizweni and the Amajuba District as a whole.
Dube highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “This project demonstrates our commitment to fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for our residents. We are dedicated to creating an environment conducive to business success and job creation.”
With a variety of different stories, the mall promises not only convenience but also significant employment opportunities for local residents.
For months leading up to the mall opening, residents, especially the youth were encouraged to reach out to their local ward councillors for job opportunities that may arise at the various shops in the mall.
“Theku Mall represents a significant investment in Newcastle’s future, reinforcing the municipality’s status as a key player in regional economic growth. As Newcastle evolves, projects like Theku Mall emphasize the commitment to infrastructure development, business empowerment and community upliftment,” stated Dube.
