Breakwaters Angling Club falls short of top spot in APL knock-out eliminator
The Angling Professional League (APL) knock out eliminator took place at Sandford, where angling clubs competed fiercely for a chance to secure a semi-final berth.
In a break from tradition, the tournament debuted an electronic draw system, marking a departure from the usual ball-draw method.
The system selected Zone D as the location, setting the stage for an intense showdown.
Breakwaters Angling Club entered the competition with a clear mission: to clinch a top-four finish, advance to the semi-final, and challenge current frontrunners, Dannhauser AC.
Despite a strong performance, Breakwaters Angling ultimately settled for second place, earning 90 points against Dannhauser AC’s impressive 107 points.
Stillwaters AC followed in third with 39 points, while Challengers AC scored 29 points.
Freshwaters Spartans AC narrowly missed the cut, edged out by just two points. Breakwaters captain, Sarfraz Khan, commended his team for their solid showing and expressed pride in the progress made by newcomers to competitive angling.
“We’re seeing real improvement with each competition,” Khan said. “Now, our focus is on the semi-final against Stillwaters AC and, ultimately, reaching the finals.”
The event’s top individual performers included Sai Naransamy, who scored 14 points, followed by Riaan Smith with 8 points and Mark Ince, 7 points.
Smith landed the heaviest carp of the day at 4.020 kg, while Naransamy secured the heaviest barbel, weighing in at 4.560 kg.
Breakwaters Angling Club’s title holders after the knock out eliminator include:
- Riaan Smith: Heaviest scaled fish (4.020 kg, KO Round 1)
- Sai Naransamy: Heaviest non-scaled fish (4.560 kg), KO Round 1), Most fish caught (16), highest points scorer (14 points in KO Round 1), knock out champion, and ‘Angler of the Year’ with a total of 27 points
- Nishen Ramduth: Rare specie (yellow fish – 1.334 kg, league round 2)
- Oosie Oosthuizen: Most consistent angler
- Yusuf Amedjee: League champion
- Rishlyn Bhagaloo: Junior angler of the year (10 points)
- Matthew Shunmugam: Senior angler of the year (16 points)
Naransamy, currently in peak form, leads the Breakwaters Composite Log and holds third place on the APL log with 27 points, solidifying his status as a key competitor.
With sights set on the semi-final at Richgate Park on December 8, Breakwaters Angling Club remains determined to end Dannhauser AC’s season-long winning streak and advance to the finals.
“Congratulations to all the title holders and to the Breakwaters Anglers for their strong performances.”
