Local lass dreams big in the world of party planning
Her business is called ‘Make a Wish’ because whatever you wish for, you will get.
Have you ever thought of having a party for yourself or a person close to you because you (or they) have reached a milestone or achieved a goal in life? Maybe you realised how much admin it is to have a party and you immediately stopped thinking about it? Well, event planners are there to help you relax while they take on all the work that comes with planning a party.
Kayla Merkle is a young local woman who is ready to fly high in the arena of events planning. She does kiddies’ parties, baby showers, bridal showers, intermediate parties, gift hampers and corporate parties. Kayla, who was born and raised in Vryheid, did her primary schooling at Nardini Convent School before going to boarding school in Newcastle. She wanted to become a lawyer one day, so she went to Johannesburg to study. When the studying didn’t go well, she worked at a call centre (which she says she enjoyed) before moving to work at the German Embassy.
In 2016, she came back home and started working in her parents’ business. When her daughter turned one year old, like all parents, she wanted to do something special for her little one, but she couldn’t find someone to help plan the party. She then decided she would plan the party herself. “When I hosted her first birthday party, everyone kept on asking who helped with the party; it was so nice. I also enjoyed every minute of planning her party; I loved doing everything myself, so I was like ‘okay, I want to do this now as my job’. That’s when I started begging my friends to host parties for their kids. I told them they should not pay my commission, but only pay for the party props I would be using. I did a party for this one friend of mine and everyone also kept asking who did the party. That was a sign that I needed to start my own business.”
Her business is called ‘Make a Wish’ because whatever you wish for, you will get. She has been planning events for almost seven years now. Kayla thanks each and every one who has shown her support, especially her business supporters, family, husband and her children.
