Anglers battle the heat in semi-final showdown
The Angling Professional League (APL) semi-finals took place at Richgate Park on December 8, delivering intense competition that exceeded expectations.
The new electronic draw system added an extra layer of excitement with teams randomly assigned to their respective zones.
All participating clubs were fully represented, with members displaying unwavering determination and a desire for victory.
The scorching sun did little to dampen the spirits of the anglers, who toiled tirelessly to outdo one another.
In a surprising turn of events, Challengers AC fielded a strong contingent of 25 members, while Dannhauser AC, the current form club, also boasted a full squad.
The competition was intense for the title of “angler of the day,” with Santosh Balram of Dannhauser AC and Ashiq Essop of Challengers AC both scoring 15 points.
However, Ashiq’s heavier catch (2,920 kg) earned him the title of “Angler of the Day,” along with a R200 prize, a red cap, and a mini Weber sponsored by Hassan Ismail of TFS, Dundee.
Dannhauser AC scored 129 points while Challengers AC finished on an impressive 109 points – a vast improvement on past performances.
The rivalry between Breakwaters AC and Stillwaters AC was palpable, with the latter seeking to unseat the former as the dominant club.
Stillwaters AC set the benchmark with 104 points, but Breakwaters AC ultimately emerged victorious with 113 points, securing their spot in the finals.

The stage is set for a thrilling showdown between Dannhauser AC and Breakwaters AC in the APL finals on March 19, 2025, at Sandford.
