Five people die in horrific crash on R34

Five people tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision between a police vehicle and a bakkie on December 29 on the Emondlo Road.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Constable Padi from the Vryheid Stock Theft Unit was travelling from Emondlo to Vryheid when the crash occurred, while the bakkie was heading towards Emondlo.
Constable Padi and his passenger died on impact.
The driver of the bakkie, Spamandla Buthelezi, along with two other passengers, also died at the scene. Another two passengers in the bakkie sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
The incident has been referred to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), who visited the crash site to inspect the vehicles involved. Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
