Newcastle police issue safety tips as gate motor theft cases increase

Amajuba District SAPS Corporate Communications Officer,  Constable N. Langa has released the following safety guidelines for residents to follow in order to avoid becoming a statistic of the recent spike in gate motor theft:

• Make sure your gate motor is enclosed in a steel casing or bracket that is difficult to reach from the outside.
• Residents are advised to secure the gate motor in a steel casing or bracket, which must be kept locked at all times. To protect the motor’s theft-resistant enclosure, use a high-quality bolt.
• Choose to use a padlock with an insurance rating.
• To prevent thieves from bending the gate rack upwards, install appropriate anti-lift brackets or weld a piece of flat bar to the rack.
• Residents should keep track of the serial number and receipt of purchase, as this will help the SAPS track down the owner of a stolen gate motor if it is recovered, or any criminal caught with a gate motor under suspicious circumstances.
• Mark or engrave your name on your gate motor.
