Flooding sweeps man from bridge

They were attempting to cross the river on a low bridge that was flooding

A 49-year-old man drowned after being washed away by the Nkongolwane River in Hlobane on Monday last week. According to witnesses, the man and two women were on their way home from a local shebeen at the time. They were attempting to cross the river on a low bridge that was flooding when the strong currents swept the man away. The Vryheid K9 Search & Rescue team, with K9 sniffer dog ‘Achil’, found the body approximately 600 metres away from the river. KwaZulu-Natal, including Vryheid and surrounding areas, has received excessive rainfall recently, causing rivers to be in flood and posing a danger to local communities.
