Over 29 households in Bhekuzulu affected by New Year’s Day floods
The floodwaters swept into homes, damaging furniture, food, and personal belongings. Many families were left grappling with the loss.
The start of the new year was marred by devastating floods that affected over 29 households in Bhekuzulu, particularly in the eMadoshini and Ghetto areas. What was meant to be a time of celebration turned into a nightmare for many families as heavy rainfall caused a stream to overflow, flooding homes and leaving a trail of destruction.
The floodwaters swept into homes, damaging furniture, food, and personal belongings. Many families were left grappling with the loss, with one resident describing the harrowing moment of waking up to find water rushing through their house. “We managed to save important documents like birth certificates and ID cards, but the rest of our belongings are ruined. Our main concern now is for the children, as they have lost all their school materials just as schools are set to open next week,” said the resident.
A team from the AbaQulusi Local Municipality, alongside officials from the Department of Human Settlements, visited the affected households. Of the 29 homes, 24 were severely damaged. Both authorities have acknowledged the urgent need for relocation, as these homes are situated on a flood line, leaving them vulnerable to further flooding, especially with more heavy rains predicted during the summer.
As the community recovers from this tragic event, the focus remains on providing immediate relief and securing alternative housing for the affected families to prevent further devastation.
