Pride of lions at large in Gluckstadt
The lions were reported in the areas under Inkosi Zondo and Inkosi Zulu, where three head of cattle were killed

Three lions were spotted in the Gluckstadt area on Friday (January 18) after reports of livestock being killed by wild animals. After further investigation, it was discovered that lions were responsible for the killings. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife organised teams and worked alongside another team led by a private professional hunter to track down the lions. They searched the area until Saturday morning, but returned with no success. On Sunday, the teams went back to the area with the assistance of a helicopter, since they suspected that the lions may be hiding in nearby dense bush.
The lions were reported in the areas under Inkosi Zondo and Inkosi Zulu, where three head of cattle were killed. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of residents as well as their livestock.
Ezemvelo has issued a warning to residents to be vigilant and immediately report any sightings to the local traditional leardership or police station. Livestock owners leave their animals grazing during the day and night, and only collect them during dipping days or when needed – hence this leaves livestock vulnerable to predators. At this stage, Ezemvelo urges all livestock owners in the area of Gluckstadt to ensure that their animals are collected and kept in enclosures overnight to minimise the risk of attacks, since lions are active at night.
It remains unclear where these lions may have escaped from. This information will only become apparent once the lions are ‘destroyed’. The lions had not been found at the time of going to print.
