Young Loskop woman uses dumped shoelaces to earn a living

Mpulo appeals to young people who are unemployed to step up and use their talents to help themselves and their families

Phumzile Mpulo from Loskop has been widely praised for her recycling idea. She uses discarded shoelaces from the local shoe factory to make various beautiful handicrafts such as door mats, coasters, plates and much more to sell to community members.

The idea of using these throwaway shoelaces for a good cause came to her in 2021 after matriculating. “I didn’t have the opportunity to go to university and I was finding it hard to get a job. However, I didn’t want to just sit down and give up, so I started this business to earn money and help myself and my family,” said Mpulo.

Amazingly, she crochets with her fingers and does not use a needle.

She said the business is doing well but there are challenges, as some people buy on credit and then never pay.
