School under the spotlight for religious discrimination
Have learners' human rights been infringed upon?

Allegations have come to light of religious intolerance at a school in the Estcourt area.
A teacher allegedly forced an Indian pupil to cut off the red string around their wrist. This alleged incident is said to have caused religious tension between the different groups at the school.
It is further alleged that this incident has led to several students being asked to remove or cover their red strings, particularly at school assembly.
A mother of one of the victims, who would like to remain anonymous in fear of her child’s safety, expressed her concern and disappointment over what has been happening at the school. She says no action has been taken so far, apart from a meeting they had with the principal and the SGB. “As parents whose children were victims, we are still waiting to hear back from the principal. It’s not just my child; there are so many incidents like this that have happened at the school.”
Another mother, who says her child was also a victim, told the Estcourt News that she is furious about what happened to her daughter, describing it as discrimination based on religion.
Attempts to obtain a statement from the school and SGB have failed.
